Welcome to the Summer Reading Club 2011-2012!

Hogwarts, Narnia, Wonderland – what do all of these places have in common?

They are all amazing places where stories have taken us. From the top end to the snow fields, from the outback to the beach, children all over Australia will be taking part in The Amazing Read, the 2011/12 Summer Reading Club program.

The Amazing Read promises to be bigger and better than ever! Public libraries from all over Australia will be participating and it will be exciting to see children and families connecting with other avid readers and writers across the nation.

The Amazing Read is designed to take you on a journey both throughout Australia and also into the magical world of books. From the beach to the bush, on a road trip or waiting for the bus, we want to hear about your favourite places to read. You can also wonder at the many different places stories can take you – from the deepest depths of the ocean into far outer space.

Free Technology Training for Seniors

Corangamite Regional Libraries, together with Telstra Connected Seniors™ are presenting Technology Training for Seniors at nine libraries throughout south west Victoria. These free workshops will assist Seniors aged 55 years and over to learn how to use, and make the most of, mobile phones, the Internet and electronic mail.

Chairman of the Board of the Corangamite Regional Library Corporation, Cr. John Harris said when announcing the launch of the program, "We are very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to seniors in our region. Mastering communication technology can enhance people’s lives, which is very important for older people who may be isolated from family and friends."

A series of workshops covering the use of mobile phones from the most basic functions to text messaging, taking and sharing photos, information searching and entertainment. Running concurrently with these classes will be workshops introducing people to the Internet and electronic mail. Cr. Harris added: "Those seniors who enjoy and feel confident they have mastered basic Internet skills may wish to then take part in additional workshops that will introduce them to blogging, shopping and banking online, and even creating their own website."

Workshops will begin across the region from Monday 14 November 2011, and enquiries and bookings can be made at the participating libraries, Colac, Warrnambool, Camperdown, Port Fairy, Cobden, Koroit, Mortlake, Terang and Timboon.

Read while you walk

Corangamite Regional Library Corporation (CRLC) is delighted to launch a new collection of Playaway preloaded MP3 books.

Smaller than a pack of cards, this new version of a talking book is ideal for time pressed people who want to keep up with their reading despite a busy life. With a Playaway you can ‘read’ while exercising, ironing, gardening, driving, or walking to work.

Stephen Fry, well known to fans of the TV program QI, not only is a narrator, but he also credits listening to talking books during the lengthy walks in helping him lose over 30 kilograms.
